How many believers today are hearing the true Gospel, a gospel that is hard on the flesh, a gospel that presents Jesus Christ as both Lord and Saviour.
Many want to be saved, but do not know they are called to serve, many want the benefits of salvation but do not know the demands laid in the Gospel to serve and follow Jesus Christ.
So when the crowd saw that neither Jesus nor His disciples were there, they got into the boats and went to Capernaum to look for Him. When they found Him on the other side of the sea, they asked Him, “Rabbi, when did You get here?”
Jesus answered them and said, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you seek Me not because you saw signs, but because you ate of the loaves and were satisfied. John 6 v 24 – 26.
Jesus Christ’s Gospel must again be preached, not to appease the whims and fleshly appetites of men, but to challenge and convict men and women of the real cost of discipleship.
As believers in Jesus Christ, we have to face the fact that much of the preaching and teaching that is popular today, are those teachings that appeal to the flesh.
A significant portion of what is being presented as being the Gospel is very much a case of; What can Jesus give to me? What can Jesus do for me? What will be my gain in coming to Christ?
Here is a challenging question to consider; What would be your reply to Jesus Christ if He was to say to you” It’s not a case of what you get from Me, it’s all about what will I receive from your life in your service to Me!
The Call To Discipleship.
“For even the Son of Man came not to be served, but to serve others, and to give His life as a ransom for many.” Matthew 20 v 28.
“A disciple is not above his teacher, but everyone who is fully trained will be like his teacher.” Luke 6 v 40.
Too much time is spent today on the pampering to the fleshly desires of people who are looking for a quick fix to their problems, not realising that those who profess to be Christians are called to serve the Kingdom of God, rather than being served by the Kingdom of God.
If the church, the body of Christ were to be exposed to the true presentation of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, how much more effective and radical would the average believer become?
It would come as a great wake up call to the people of God if the true Gospel of Jesus Christ was to be preached and embraced today, this is the urgent need for the believer, there are far too many people who are ignorant of the Gospel that Jesus Christ Himself brought into the world.
Counting The Cost.
Which of you, wishing to build a tower, does not first sit down and count the cost to see if he has the resources to complete it? Otherwise, if he lays the foundation and is unable to finish the work, everyone who sees it will ridicule him, saying, ‘This man could not finish what he started to build.’ Luke 14 v 28 -30.
There is little said today concerning having to count the cost of coming to faith in Jesus Christ, how many times have you heard this statement” by just merely repeating this prayer after me, in less than one minute you can be saved, and you’re on the way to heaven”.
Jesus Christ never invited anyone to join a church; He called people to follow Him, into a living revelation of knowing His Father.
There is a price to pay, there is a cost to consider in desiring to become a true disciple of Jesus Christ, I am not referring to merely attending church regularly, it’s not about mere lip service that Jesus Christ is seeking after, but the call or demand of the Gospel call on a person’s life is that there must come a dying to self. A new life in Christ, living for Him and His Kingdom, serving Jesus and having His will manifested through our lives.
If anyone serves Me, he must follow Me. Where I am, there My servant also will be. If anyone serves Me, the Father will honour him. John 12 v 26.
There is no admonishment given to young converts today concerning taking up the call of serving Jesus Christ. People are being deceived into thinking the reason we come to Christ is to have all our needs met. Jesus has been relegated to the place of being the one who serves, instead of being served. Jesus Christ never gives the call to discipleship as an option; it is a command.
Matthew 10 V 37
He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me: and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. And anyone who does not take up his cross and follow Me is not worthy of Me.
Luke 14 v 28-30
For which of you, intending to build a tower, sitteth not down first, and counteth the cost, whether he have sufficient to finish it? Lest haply, after he hath laid the foundation, and is not able to finish it, all that behold it begin to mock him, Saying, This man began to build and was not able to finish.
Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abides alone: but if it dies, it brings forth much fruit. He that loves his life shall lose it, and he that hates his life in this world shall keep it unto life eternal. If any man serves Me, let him follow Me; and where I am, there shall also My servant be: if any man serves Me, he will My Father honour.
Denial of Self.
Matthew 10 v 24-25
The disciple is not above his master, nor the servant above his Lord. It is enough for the disciple that he be as his Master and the servant as his Lord. If they have called the master of the house Beelzebub, how much more shall they call them of His household?
Then said Jesus unto His disciples, If any man will come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.
And when Jesus had called the people unto Him with His disciples also, He said unto them, Whosoever will come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me.
And Jesus said to them all, If any man will come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me.
Luke 14 v 27
And whoever does not carry his cross and follow Me cannot be My disciple.
Losing Own Life.
He that finds his life shall lose it: and he that lose his life for My sake shall find it.
For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for My sake shall find it.
For whosoever will save his life shall lose it; but whosoever shall lose his life for My sake and the Gospel’s, the same shall save it.
For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: but whosoever will lose his life for My sake, the same shall save it.
Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness’ sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Yet hath he does not root in himself, but endure for a while: for when tribulation or persecution arises because of the Word, by and by, he is offended.
Then shall they deliver you up to be afflicted, and shall kill you: and you shall be hated of all nations for my name’s sake.
Then Peter began to say unto him, Lo, we have left all, and have followed You. And Jesus answered and said, Verily I say unto you, There is no man that has left house, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for My sake, and the Gospel’s, But he shall receive a hundredfold now in this time, houses, and brethren, and sisters, and mothers, and children, and lands, with persecutions; and in the world to come eternal life.
Remember the word that I said to you, ‘A slave is not greater than his master’ If they persecuted Me, they will also persecute you; if they kept My word, they will keep yours also.
Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.
Matthew 11v 29
Take My yoke upon you, and learn of Me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and you shall find rest unto your souls.
Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be you therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves.
Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Whosoever, therefore, shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven.
And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased, and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted.
But Jesus called them unto him, and said, You know that the princes of the Gentiles exercise dominion over them, and they that are great exercise authority upon them. But it shall not be so among you: but whosoever will be great among you, let him be your minister, And whosoever will be chief among you, let him be your servant: Even as the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.
And Jesus sat down, and called the twelve, and said unto them, If any man desire to be first, the same shall be last of all, and servant of all.
But so shall it not be among you: but whosoever will be great among you, shall be your minister: And whosoever of you will be the chiefest, shall be a servant of all.
Luke 14v 8-11
When you are invited of any man to a wedding, sit not down in the highest room; lest a more honourable man than you be bidden of him; And he that bade you and him come and say to, Give this man place; and you begin with shame to take the lowest room.
But when you are invited, go and sit down in the lowest room; that when he that bade you comes, he may say unto you, Friend, go up higher: then shall you have worship in the presence of them that sit at meat with you. For whosoever exalts himself shall be abased, and he that humbles himself shall be exalted.
I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for every one that exalts himself shall be abased; and he that humbles himself shall be exalted.
Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.
But go you and learn what that means I will have mercy, and not sacrifice: for I am not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.
Should not you also have had compassion on your fellow servant, even as I pitied you?
So Jesus had compassion on them, and touched their eyes: and immediately, their eyes received sight, and they followed Him.
And Jesus, when He came out, saw much people, and was moved with compassion toward them because they were as sheep not having a shepherd: and He began to teach them many things.
And he said He that showed mercy on him. Then said Jesus unto him, Go, and do you likewise.
Hated By The World.
And you shall be hated of all men for My name’s sake: but he that endures to the end shall be saved.
Then shall they deliver you up to be afflicted, and shall kill you: and you shall be hated of all nations for My name’s sake.
Blessed are you, when men shall hate you, and when they shall separate you from their company, and shall reproach you, and cast out your name as evil, for the Son of Man’s sake.
And you shall be hated of all men for My name’s sake.
If the world hates you, you know that it hated Me before it hated you. If you were of the world, the world would love his own: but because you are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world. Therefore the world hates you.
I have given them Your Word; and the world has hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.
Caring For The Poor.
“So when you give to the poor, do not sound a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and the streets, so that men may honour them Truly I say to you, they have their reward in full. “But when you give to the poor, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing,
Jesus said unto him, If you would be perfect, go and sell that you have, and give to the poor, and you shall have treasure in heaven: and come and follow Me.
Then Jesus beholding him loved him, and said unto him, One thing you lack: go your way, sell whatsoever you have and give to the poor, and you shall have treasure in heaven: and come, take up the cross, and follow Me.
The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me because He has anointed Me to preach the Gospel to the poor; he has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised,
And Jesus lifted up His eyes on His disciples, and said, Blessed, be you poor: for yours is the Kingdom of God.
But when you make a feast, call the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind:
Now when Jesus heard these things, he said unto him, Yet lack you one thing: sell all that you have and distribute unto the poor, and you shall have treasure in heaven: and come, follow Me.
